Akufo-Addo appeals to the International community to aid Africa in overcoming the effect of Covid-19 and the Russia/Ukraine war

The world community has been encouraged by President Akufo-Addo to set up an effort to support developing nations in coping with the destruction brought on by the devastating coronavirus pandemic.

On Tuesday, June 21, 2022, the president of Ghana stressed the importance of the International community stepping up efforts to assist developing countries in protecting their economies from the devastating effect of Covid-19 in his keynote speech at the 15th Edition of the European Development Days (EDD) in Brussels, Belgium.

The president also made note of how the continuing Russia/Ukraine war has made matters worse for developing economies. He claimed that this trend is hurting many developing nations, including Ghana and Africa in particular.

A recent United Nations analysis indicates that 70% of Africa’s economies are at grave risk from the Russian war in Ukraine. He went on to discuss the fatal repercussions of the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine on African economies and what lies in wait for emerging countries.

He emphasized, “The World Bank also tells us that, subsequent to the conflict, the number of poor people in sub-Saharan African countries would rise from 413 million to 463 this year, an increase of 50 million persons.”

He also added that the Debt Service Suspension Initiative (DSSI), the initial facility created by the G20 countries to offer relief to economies with high debt challenges, has expired in December 2021 and has not been renewed, so support from non-IMF programmed countries to reduce their debt burden is currently limited.

President Akufo-Addo also discussed the relationship between Africa and Europe, which, in his opinion, should serve as a catalyst for ensuring that Africa continues to receive the necessary support, particularly during these difficult times.

He said that the long-standing link of blood, culture, geography, and history that have bound Africa and Europe together should be used as a springboard for greater cooperation between the two countries.
