How Burna Boy Rose From Being An Underrated Artist To A Grammy Award Winner

Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu otherwise known as Burna Boy is arguably one of the biggest and most successful African artists but it hasn’t always been so. As we all know, there is always a beginning to every success story.

In 2012, Burna Boy rose to fame after releasing mixtapes like “BURN NOTICE”, “BURN IDENTITY”, and his hit song “Like to party”. which were well received in his hometown, Rivers state. His sound was so unique and different from what other artists in Nigeria have been offering. After some time, he released several singles like “Run my Race”, “Always Love you”, “Tonight”, and “Yawa dey” which were all included in his first studio album titled L.I.F.E (Leaving an Impact for Eternity).

His first album was an instant hit and he earned some nominations for it. However, the most significant nomination was “The Next Rated” category at the Headies which he lost to Sean fizzle. Not long after that, things began going wrong as it seemed like his style of music was not generally accepted by all Nigerians. Those who enjoyed his music could not understand why some people felt like he was just making unnecessary noise, but one thing remained constant during this time as he kept on releasing good music to the people who appreciate his presence.

At a particular time, it even felt like South Africans appreciate his songs more than Nigerians. However, 2018 was was the turning point in Burna Boys’ career after he released his third studio album called outside. His third album was well accepted by the public, but what attracted people most was his popular song titled “YE”

With the attention and credit he received for YE, Burna didn’t slow down as went on to release hit singles like “Gbona”, “Killin them”, “On the low”, and “Dangote” which were all global hits. All these singles were all included in his African Giant Album which he earned a Grammy nomination but lost to Angelique Kidjo.

After losing to Angelique kidjo, Burna Boy consoled himself by releasing his 5th studio album called Twice as Tall. Luckily, he received his second Grammy nomination under the Best Global Music Album category, which he won. Currently, Burna Boy is a proud winner of A Grammy Award Winner.
